Japanese culture and art event TOKYO “Suki” Festival

The TOKYO “Suki” Festival is starting in Ueno, a Global Capital of Culture, and home to various cultural and art facilities. This event is a meeting place for art, and communicates Japanese culture to the world.
During the festival, as well as holding art exhibitions and workshops some facilities will open at night. Discover new refined tastes in the round-the-clock buzz of Ueno, a Global Capital of Culture.

Katsuhiko Hibino and Sayaka Shimada “Shinobazu Pond Fire Art Wabi-Sabi”
Fireworks blossom over the silent pond with muted elegance. Flowers of fire different to the fireworks that color the night skies of summer will blossom over Shinobazu Pond. Witness Fire Art Wabi-Sabi coloring the darkness of Shinobazu, hidden in the heart of the city.

Shinji Ohmaki “Memorial Rebirth”
Countless soap bubbles defamiliarize the everyday greenery of Ueno. As the stories of onlookers intersect with the history created by the now unwittingly-overlooked vista and the land, new excitement is evoked by this blending of worlds.

Taro Suzuki “Water Mirror”
With Shinobazu Pond as its canvas, this piece will delight visitors with reflected light playing over the surface of the water and changing with the hour according to wind flow.
All around the Shinobazu boating pond, objects floating on the water are enveloped in pale, soft light. The real world and the world reflected on the water’s surface become one without boundaries. Enjoy a magical world while you listen to the sound of autumn insects.

teamLab “teamLab Ball”
TeamLab is known for its vibrant light productions. When you touch the illuminated balls along the way between Kiyomizu Kannon-do Temple and Benten-dō, the color of light changes and generates sound.

Kazuyuki Hashimoto “ITO EN Tea Taster Forest”
Specialist tea tasters from Ito En, Ltd. go all out to share the delights of Japanese tea, from how to enjoy tea to the secrets of tea production. The event offers a new direction for tea, through the refreshing and innovative atmosphere of the event space, and original teaware made by students from Tokyo University of the Arts.

Geisai (Tokyo University of the Arts Festival) mikoshi portable shrine
Huge portable shrines from Tokyo University of the Arts’ campus festival Geisai shake the green spaces of Ueno. On display will be the five best pieces made by students for this year’s festival (Gorilla, Crab, Momotaro, Turtle and Inoshikachō).

National Museum of Western Art in collaboration with Tokyo University of the Arts
Special lecture “Discussion on Beauty” (tentative title), by Tokyo University of the Arts Performing Arts Center
In a dream fusion of music and art, this lavish event offers a performance by internationally-recognized violinist Akiko Suwanai and a talk by National Museum of Western Art director Akiko Mabuchi.

Tokyo University of the Arts Project 2016: “Erik Satie and his time: from the Fin-de-Siècle to the Belle Époque”
3rd in series: “Satie and the piano, Satie and language” lecture and concert

Satie was known for his eccentric composition titles and disdainful attitude. He worked strange words and phrases into his scores which were completely different to normal musical terminology. Leading performer of Satie works Aki Takahashi will introduce several piano pieces while highlighting the language Satie used.

Dedication of music to Le Corbusier: Satie, Bach, Pachelbel, Xenakis
During the 1950s composer Iannis Xenakis worked with Le Corbusier, who designed the World Heritage-listed National Museum of Western Art. As well as compositions by Xenakis, there will be performances of Satie works which evoke the atmosphere of the Paris Le Corbusier lived and worked in, and pieces by German composers to coincide with the Cranach exhibition currently on show at the National Museum of Western Art.

Album-making on the theme of “Suki”
“Asymmetrical.” “I like it.” “Empty.”
Make a “Suki”-themed album of your aesthetic sense! Roam around various exhibitions, the zoo and the park taking whatever photos you like. Starting at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, a notebook-making event and review session will be held at Tokyo University of the Arts.

Workshop: making animal tails out of newspaper
Children make animal tails out of newspaper, learning how to make close observations and capture details. They are encouraged to go around the zoo wearing their tails. A special “Panda Day” version of the workshop will be held on the 23rd.

Yorimichi bijutsukan (“Stopping-on-the-way Art museum “)
Yorimichi bijutsukan will be held at the “Van Gogh and Gauguin” exhibition.
In this weekend evening program, adults enjoy an exhibition together and then talk over a tea.
