Breath of Sound (Tokyo Traditional Arts Program)

A joint performance featuring traditional wind-instruments such as "Ryuteki", "Nohkan", "Shakuhachi" and "Shinobue" in collaboration with contemporary dancers (Motoko Hirayama, Kaiji Moriyama)

There is a wide range of Japanese traditional wind instruments that originate from ancient court music “Gagaku” to the modern age “Kabuki” music. Discover and enjoy the various colors, tones and the inspiring sound of Japanese traditional wind instruments! The program consists of 2 parts. Part I will focus on the instrumental works using variety of traditional wind instruments. Following a contemporary work performed by a traditional orchestra of “Gagaku”, a piece of traditional instrumental music from the Noh called “subayashi” will be played. Then, another contemporary piece will be played by a grand ensemble of 50 bamboo recorders called “Shakuhachi”. Part II will be an exciting collaboration and improvisation of traditional wind instruments with contemporary dancers. Witness the magical spectacle of leading artists, for this one night only.
