Tokyo Caravan in Toyama

Toyama’s distinctive culture and Tokyo artists meet, intermingle and create!
“Walking on The Toyamandara!”

Spearheaded by playwright director and actor Hideki Noda, the Tokyo Caravan roving cultural movement has continued to develop performances based on new and unique forms of expression. A diverse array of artists across languages, borders and artistic genres are invited to participate, creating a “mingling of cultures” between expressive artists and performers whose paths have mostly never crossed before.
With the aim of becoming a nationwide platform for cultural movements that will continue into the future beyond the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Tokyo Caravan continues to roll out all over Japan as a unique “cultural circus,” welcoming celebrities active in the world of arts and culture, new talent and lively young expressive artists and performers.

Leading Tokyo Caravan in Toyama isYuichi Kinoshita (dramaturg and Kinoshita Kabuki head), who is known as an up-and-coming expressive artist and who led Tokyo Caravan in Kochi in 2018. Together with stage director Wataru Kitao (choreographer/dancer/Baobab dance company leader) and others, he is visiting Toyama Prefecture, experiencing the history and culture of Toyama, and initiating interaction with local artists.
This time around, leading figures of Toyama’s distinctive culture and local expressive artists showcasing among other things Etchu Isami Taiko drumming, choral singing and puppetry will be joined by actors and dancers from Tokyo including Kitao for a cross-genre intermingling aimed at developing new forms of expression together. What sort of performances will flower as a result? The Tokyo Caravan project has generated a host of thrills and excitement, and now makes further strides in Toyama. Come experience the rare and special live and unplugged performances unique to Tokyo Caravan!
