Tokyo Caravan in Komazawa 2021

With regret we have decided to cancel “Tokyo Caravan in Komazawa 2021.” The announcement of a state of emergency has made it difficult for artists and other participants from all over Japan to gather in Tokyo, and as a result we decided we could not easily represent the core concept of creativity under the Tokyo Caravan project, namely the “creation of unique forms of expression through the“mingling of cultures” between expressive artists who don’t usually cross paths with each other.”
We understand people were looking forward to attending the event and we received many applications. We sincerely apologize for making this announcement with the event just around the corner. We kindly ask for your understanding in this matter. (07/27/2021)

General Supervisor Hideki Noda’s “traveling cultural circus” is back for the first time in two years!

Tokyo Caravan organizers will start accepting applications to view performances of “Tokyo Caravan in Komazawa 2021,” to be held at the Komazawa Olympic Park General Sports Ground Gymnasium on Saturday, August 21 and Sunday, August 22, 2021. A succession of confirmed appearances by artists at the frontlines of the creative world who have taken part in Tokyo Caravan before, and an array of dynamic expressive artists from various regions includes Takako Matsu (actor),Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra (musicians), Kaela Kimura (artist), Reijiro Tsumura (Noh actor), Noriyuki Sawa (puppeteer) , Bisen Aoyagi (calligrapher), and contemporary artist UJINO, who will gather in Komazawa Olympic Park for the event, spearheaded by General Supervisor Hideki Noda. Starting in the Komazawa district of Tokyo in 2015, the project has traveled to Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro, Tohoku, Kyoto, Kumamoto, Toyota, Kochi, Akita, Iwaki, Saitama, Toyama, Okayama and Hokkaido. The new forms of expression generated over the project’s journey are set to come into their own in a one-off performance. Come experience rare and special live and unplugged performances by a fabulous lineup unique to Tokyo Caravan!

Spearheaded by playwright director and actor Hideki Noda, the Tokyo Caravan roving cultural movement has continued to develop performances based on new and unique forms of expression created by the “cultural mingling” of a diverse array of artists across languages, borders and artistic genres.
In addition it is being implemented as a Leading Project for Tokyo Tokyo FESTIVAL, an initiative designed to create a sense of excitement from a cultural perspective in the Olympic and Paralympic host city Tokyo through a variety of cultural programs promoting Tokyo’s appeal as a city of artistic and cultural attractions; and also as a co-hosted program for the Tokyo 2020 NIPPON Festival in 2021.
