The Arts Academy: Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre Professional Development Training Program aims to train young people with aspirations to work at public cultural facilities, arts organizations, etc. in the skills that they will need to thrive as producers and coordinators or make career transitions into the performing arts field.
Through lectures, seminars, and on-site training, participants will not only gain the knowledge and abilities that their target professions require but also enjoy opportunities to network with other theater personnel.

Objectives

• Field experience: Help participants gain the real-life experience — not just theoretical textbook knowledge — that they need to bring visions to fruition
• Classroom learning: Help participants develop a solid foundation for their careers through wide-ranging knowledge and creative-thinking skills
• Networking: Help participants make connections to benefit their future career paths

Experiential learning: performance production, theater management, festival organization, public relations and other topics

Small number for each course

1. Program organizers will create a detailed plan for each participant’s field training curriculum based on his/her experience and aptitude levels, and the program schedule. Participants will engage in multiple field training programs throughout the training period.
2. Evaluation for the long-term course will be performed at the end of the year. Where deemed necessary, participants can extend the course by a maximum of one year (however there may be changes to course details).

*If a participant demonstrates unsatisfactory performance in his/her training tasks, program organizers may revoke his/her participation privileges (even during the training period).

Training period

The training program will run for roughly 10 months.
■Short-term course
Roughly a three-month period between late April,2022 – February 28, 2023 (Tuesday)

Daily schedule
Generally, sessions will run in shifts of 7 hours and 45 minutes between 8:45 and 22:00.
*Participants of both the long-term and short-term courses will undergo training from four to six days a week (including weekends and holidays) depending on the type of training involved.
*The start and end date of the short-term course will be decided by consultation, taking into consideration the program schedule and the wishes of the individual.
*Since both long-term and short-term courses constitute full-time training, in principle participants may not engage in dual employment and side businesses.

Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre, Tokyo Metropolitan Arts Studio (SUITENGU PIT), and others

Participation is free. Participants are responsible for their own meal costs and transportation to Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre.
*In cases where training takes place at locations other than Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre, the program will cover the costs of transportation from Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre to the corresponding locations.

Participants will write monthly reports and a final report on the various tasks they engage in during the training period, on topics specified by Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre, and submit their reports by the prescribed deadlines. Participants who submit reports satisfying the prescribed criteria and participate in the course to a satisfactory level will, as a general rule, receive 180,000 yen per report.

*The above amount includes research costs, telecommunications costs, and administrative expenses arising from the report-preparation process.
*The above arrangements do not constitute an employment agreement and thus fall outside the scope of workers’ compensation insurance, employment insurance, and social insurance.
*To determine arrangements for researchers coming from public cultural facilities, etc., Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre will consult with the corresponding organizations and finalize the conditions, etc.
*Program organizers will transfer payments (regarded as income and subject to withholding tax) to the corresponding recipients’ designated accounts.

1. Aims to work in production as a producer/coordinator for theater and arts organizations, etc., and has the capability to pursue training tasks with serious, dedicated motivation throughout the training period.
2. In principle be between the ages of 22 and 35.
3. Meets any of the following conditions:
   (1) The applicant has worked on production in the theater/music fields (for a theater troupe, production company, on a freelance basis, or for university or graduate school, etc.) for approximately 3 years or more.
   (2) The applicant has worked at a cultural facility.
   (3) The applicant has worked at a company, etc., for approximately 3 years or more.
4. Has basic computer skills (Excel/Word/email, etc.).
   

1. First round: document screening
   Program organizers will screen the application documents and essay on a given topic to select applicants for the second round.
2. Second round: interview
   Date: Sunday, February 13, 2022
   Program organizers will interview applicants who have passed the first round, focusing mainly on each applicant’s insights and personal makeup.

*Personal information included in applications for participation will be used within the scope necessary for applicant selection.

1. Screening (first-round) results will be sent to the applicants within around 2 weeks after the application deadline.
2. Interview (second-round) results will be sent to the applicants within 2 weeks after the interviews are complete.

*Please note that program organizers are unable to respond to inquiries by telephone, etc., concerning the results of either round of the selection process.
