Exhibition: Creating expression from records 2024

Genre:
  • Art Project ,
  • Workshop

This is a series of workshops for creating forms of expression by looking at existing records or making new ones. This is the third round of workshops since the program began in 2022.

We start by hearing from people who practice expression using records from the past, and taking a close look at and discussing these expressions. Participants will then decide on themes based on their own interests and explore forms of expression generated by records related to those themes. In order to approach records from a variety of perspectives, discussion and listening will be introduced into the process.

There will be no restrictions regarding expressive techniques, which can include reports, exhibition and project plans, paintings, pieces of writing, photography, video, performance, and installations. On the final day we will hold an exhibition of these.
Your record of expression does not necessarily have to be complete as a work; we are giving shape to expression to share our interests with others and engage in dialog.

Recommended for people who record something on a daily basis, are interested in verbatim accounts and research, or would like to create an expressive work associated with these processes.

*Program details are subject to change.

Workshop flow

Saturday, July 27
We will hold a lecture on record-generated expression, as well as a workshop on verbatim accounts. After looking at practices by artists for “creating expression from records” in the second half, we will discuss and attempt to create our own expression.

Sunday, August 4
We will visit museums/ reference libraries in Koto-ku for field research; and after listening to what the practitioners have to say, participants will get to work with their hands creating their own mini exhibition. Participants will also think about their personal interests and research going forward.

Based on two days of activities, participants will work on their own practices. They will go talk to people they are interested in, research materials etc., and based on this take on the challenge of creating expression using a method of their choosing.

Saturday, August 17
This day is set aside for open consultation. Participants can consult with the facilitators as necessary. Also possible online.

Sunday, September 8
Participants each bring their own forms of expression and discuss with other participants.
*The previous day, Saturday 7, is the designated date for setting up in the exhibition venue.

*Report from last year’s event: Karoku Recycle “Creating expression from records” 2023 report
*“Creating expression from records” is an exhibition with the same title organized by volunteer participants every year after the workshop program ends. The next exhibition is scheduled to be held around February 2025.
