Reading the poetry collection“Inochi no Me” (Buds of Life)

  • Art Project ,

Karoku Reading Club is a forum for dialogue in which participants focus on records of past disasters and related creative expression (films, paintings, plays, memoirs, novels, etc.), and discuss their various thoughts and feelings.

For this event, we begin by reading “Inochi no Me” (Buds of Life), a joint collection of poems by people from sanatoriums for Hansen’s disease (leprosy). This poetry collection, published by Iwanami in August 2024 and originally published in 1953, represents a new gold standard in literature dealing with leprosy. It expresses a will to never despair despite the hardships caused by Japan’s former segregation policy, aspiring instead to hope, solidarity, and renewal in the belief that people can change the future themselves.

In addition to protesting discrimination, the collection covers a variety of topics: people’s individual medical conditions and treatments; their yearning for the hometowns and families they were separated from; studies of the birds, plants, insects, and other living things around them; and romantic sentiments.

On the day of the event, “Inochi no Me”will be introduced by the speakers, after which participants can join in reading the poems, and engage in dialogue in which they can listen and discuss at will.
There is no need for participants to get hold of a copy of the collection in advance. People who are not familiar with Hansen’s disease or those who have had little contact with poetry are welcome.
