Opening the Records
“Creating expression from records”

Genre:
  • Exhibition / Screening

“Creating expression from records” is a workshop which has been held every summer since 2022. Based on their own interests, workshop participants start by gathering existing records or making new ones themselves. They then share and discuss the process with each other, practicing forms of expression designed to make their records or research open and accessible.

For this exhibition, 8 volunteers from among participants of past workshops have put together works created on the basis of research, as well as documentary materials etc. on themes they have tackled since the time of the workshop, or things they are currently interested in, exploring and presenting these in their current forms of expression. The themes vary greatly in line with each person’s experience of daily life, but when you put them next to each other, you might discover similar issues, or conversely, similar themes that involve considerably different details.

This is a project that each person will (or may) engage with as their life’s work over the long term. Organizers expect that pausing at each juncture, giving shape to and presenting their forms of expression, and sharing them with different people will create even more enriching and satisfying activities for participants. Please come along and enjoy the form of this unique project as it stands now.

*Please note event details are subject to change.

Exhibition themes

The title of the exhibition is “Opening the Records.”
Earthquakes, war, family, community… the 8 participants have engaged in a wide range of themes.
The exhibition carefully lifts the lid on private, secret records. The Opening Records project is about listening to stories and voices, taking a good look at a subject, and making a record of it. This exhibition focuses on these “beginnings.”
We hope that this exhibition provides an opportunity for people to stop and think about simple questions and everyday concerns, and for people who meet here to talk to each other.
