WAHAHA HOMPO PRESENTS
“Two Women Unfit for Marriage”

  • Organization : WAHAHA HOMPO
  • Section : None
  • Type of Grant Program : Single
  • Art Forms : Theater

Outline

What sets apart this two-person performance, put on by Hiroe Ohashi, a deaf actress, and Mikoe Okubo, an actress without any hearing loss, is the fact that the audience is handicapped as well. The two performers converse in a mixture of sign language and silent mouthing , leaving audience members—hearing impaired or not—guessing at what’s being said, allowing viewers to experience the story together with the characters.
Story: A deaf woman and a woman without any hearing impairments, both single, meet at a gathering of people trying to give up alcohol. The two each have their own issues, but manage to hit it off. This begins a rocky journey as they fight, make up, and face head-on the many obstacles that lie in their way. Will they be able to quit drinking? Will they be able to marry?! Not quite fictional yet not quite real, this story may actually be more a horror than a comedy…
Performers: Hiroe Ohashi, Mikoe Okubo, Junya Muramoto
Producer/Director: Tabe Hajime
Script: Yohei Yamazaki
Created and authored by: WAHAHA HOMPO

Profile

【WAHAHA HOMPO】
WAHAHA HOMPO was born in the Eighties, when small theaters were all the rage. Tabe Hajime, a leading broadcast writer who directed performances of the Tokyo Vaudeville Show, a theatrical troupe of emerging actors, teamed up with Masahiro Sato, Suzumasa, Rie Shibata, Masami Hisamoto and other upcoming performers from the same troupe to form WAHAHA HOMPO in 1984. Energetic and powerful, the troupe believes in having fun and remaining positive no matter the circumstances.
