International Collaboration Series 1 Japan x Malaysia “Family”

  • Organization : Asia Women Performing Arts Collective
  • Section : International project
  • Type of Grant Program : Single
  • Art Forms : Theater

Outline

This is the first collaborative work resulting from dialog and exchange ongoing since 2014 between women from Malaysia and Japan involved in the performing arts. Based on a play depicting the life and family of a woman of Chinese descent who migrated to the Malay Peninsula at the start of the 20th century, this work portrays the contemporary “family” using new interpretations and forms of expression. What does it mean for a woman to build a career and have a family? What does respecting multiculturalism and diversity mean? By presenting the real issues we face today, the collective hopes this work will uncover new values.
