Outline

In conjunction with consecutive performances of Suzuki Tadashi’s representative work The Trojan Woman and his new piece The Origin of the Song “Karatachi Nikki,” theater classes will be held targeting young theater artists.

The Trojan Woman
First performed in 1974, Suzuki Tadashi’s most important work, which has been taken to 15 countries worldwide, has been revived for the 21st century with a completely new staging. Its themes of the appalling violence of war unchanged since ancient times, the impotence of religion and the resignation of the individual resonate strongly with a modern audience.

The Origin of the Song “Karatachi Nikki”
How did the words to the popular song “Karatachi Nikki” come to be written? The untold story recounted in the delusions of an old woman is invested with the passion and sorrow of a woman who lived for love.
Forming a counterpart to The Trojan Woman, it is a study of the loneliness of people today.

Suzuki’s Theatre Class for Theatre Artists
Director Suzuki Tadashi demonstrates a dress rehearsal of The Trojan Woman for young theater artists hoping to be future leaders in theater, and engages in dialogue with participants on directing and acting theory, and the social role of theater.

Suzuki Tadashi spearheaded the foundation of the Waseda Shogekijo in 1966, in the Shinjuku area of Tokyo.
In 1976 the group moved to Toga village in Toyama Prefecture, and was was renamed SCOT. Many of SCOT’s representative works like Dionysus, and Greetings from the Edge of the Earth were created in Toga. As one of Japan’s leading contemporary theater groups, SCOT has to date been invited to perform these works in 84 cities in 31 countries.
In addition, the group has produced several successive international co-productions, such as King Lear with the Moscow Art Theatre, Electra with the Arko Arts Theater from Korea, and Cinderella with the Shanghai Theatre Academy.
