Started in 1987, the annual Image Forum Festival seeks out new and hip domestic and international movies. In addition to movies, it also offers a space for video installations and performances that demonstrate the depth and breadth of the visual medium.
The 27th Image Forum Festival will consist of three divisions: Japan Tomorrow (General Public Submissions); New Film Japan (Japan-Only Invitational); and New Film International (International Invitational). The festival will also show a special feature, “Documentary That Creates: Limitless Cine-eye,” and “In Memory of Donald Richie,” as well as a special invitational showing of “JURY.” The varied lineup contains new domestic and international works, along with a selection of historical masterpieces. There will be 22 separate programs consisting of 57 domestic Japanese works and 30 foreign ones, for a total of 87 films and video displays.
Image Forum is dedicated to the advancement of visual culture through film, video, and cutting-edge media. The group preserves and promotes creative works both foreign and domestic, and fosters the next generation of filmmakers. Its affiliated company, Dagurreo Press, Inc., publishes books on filmmaking and video software, as well as operating movie theaters. Image Forum won the 1988 Japan Movie Pen Club Award.
