Outline

Noh has been preserved and refined by actors of each era for over 650 years. In 2001, Noh was named a “Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity” in UNESCO’s first proclamation of this designation.

To commemorate this recognition, a performance is held annually for the purpose of popularizing Noh in Japan and overseas. In recent years emphasis has been placed on spreading the word to non-Japanese. This year, to mark 50 years since diplomatic relations were established between Japan and Algeria, we will introduce Noh to Algerians staying in Japan, as well as exchange students of the age group that will lead the next generation (100 exchange students will be selected by lottery and given free invitations.)

Each performance will have plasma TVs at the front of the hall displaying lyrics in Japanese and English. Free booklets offering insights into the world of Noh will also be provided to the audience. These helpful guides are for both oldcomers and newcomers to the fascinating world of Noh.
