Inaugurated in 2002, Dance Triennale Tokyo 2012 is Japan’s largest contemporary dance festival, a showcase for choreographers and dancers from around the world. The festival’s aim is to expand the reach of contemporary dance through interaction and exchange between contemporary dance artists active in the global performing arts arena, as well as to enrich the cultural foundation where the seeds of originality are sown. The fifth edition featured more than 15 participating artists and companies from 10 countries: Belgium, Brazil, France, Germany, Indonesia, Israel, Korea, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Japan. In addition to performances at Aoyama Theater, Spiral Hall, and Goethe-Institut Tokyo as well a series of dance workshops, the Triennale also featured a diverse program of dance-related events, including outdoor performances at the Pilotis Plaza at Kodomo no Shiro (National Children’s Castle), a dance showcase at the Spiral 1F entrance along Aoyama Dori, dance film screenings at Theater Image Forum, a book fair at Aoyama Book Center Main Store, and symposiums at the United Nations University.
