Outline

The Sumida River Sumi-Yume Art Project (Sumi-Yume for short) began in 2016 when the Sumida Hokusai Museum first opened. Organizers hope the project will make the area, where Katsushika Hokusai spent his 90 years, a bustling and lively place. The project will gather together people engaging in not only art and culture but all the various forms of creative expression; people who will develop project ideas that make full use of the area’s various resources and places.
With Hokusai and the Sumida River as its key themes, the essentially two-pronged Sumi-Yume project will comprise an open call to solicit and then actualize diverse project proposals from the public, as well as impactful sponsored initiatives. Sponsored events include (1)Sumi-Yume’s Tanabata Festival, featuring an online music composition workshop with musician Makoto Nomura and concerts including “Hokusai Manga Quartet” as well as talk events such as “A Medicine Chest of Edo Vegetables” by food artist EAT&ART TARO, all of which will be also available online;(2) a sail along the Sumida river by “Zipper Boat,” the seminal work by contemporary artist Yasuhiro Suzuki; and (3)the participatory project KOSUGEI-16“Dondoko! Giant Paper Sumo Wrestling – Hokusai Sumi-Yume Tournament” by artist unit KOSUGE1-16, which will tour around four places in Sumida City and hold its Honbasho Main Tournament in Ryogoku.
