This work features in the “2020 Koharu Kisaragi Project” masterminded by Theatre Unit LABO! A new production of Kisaragi’s play “ANOTHER” (1980), it is designed to showcase the appeal and possibilities of the late Kisaragi’s work for a contemporary audience.

With theaters closed due to the spread of coronavirus, the performance as originally scheduled was canceled, and after some discussion a private performance limited to the people involved was held somewhere in Tokyo, with video of the performance ultimately being streamed online. But while the troupe overcame the difficult production conditions, each troupe member became more clearly aware of the theme of Koharu Kisaragi’s play, i.e. the overwhelming severance of individual connections in urban society; and the online stream ended up being something that conveyed to the audience an even more realistic sense of distance in this disconnect, attesting to the modernity of the playwright.
