The existence of “film” is under threat for various reasons, including natural disasters and political strife. Material to be screened disappears or is damaged/degrades. Screening sites and programming itself may also be exposed to crises. What can film do in order to survive when circumstances arise in which it is difficult for “film” to exist? This program looks for potential answers to this question through a transnational, pan-Asian dialogue.
Image Forum
Image Forum’s predecessor “Underground Film Center” was established in 1971, with the organization changing its name to “Image Forum” in 1977. It began cinematheque activities in 1972, screening mainly experimental and independent films. It went on to engage in film distribution, establishing the Image Forum Institute of Moving Image in 1977 to cultivate and train video artists. The ongoing Image Forum Festival was launched in 1987.
