Outline

The entire Spiral Garden played host to a solo exhibition by a contemporary artist Asae Soya, who creates works full of color and light. The venue provided an overview of the diverse creative output of Soya, an artist with an exceptional sense of color, with works on display including paintings of weeds growing in overgrown vacant city lots during the pandemic; a monumental oil painting depicting marine light; and a new installation making use of the light-filled glass surfaces of the venue. The exhibition was also a rare chance to see the drawings at the source of the artist’s creative ideas, on display together for the first time.In Soya’s hands, ordinary everyday scenes like weeds, a washbasin filled with water, and the light shining into a room were heralded in soft, vivid colors and light.
