Tokiwazu-bushi is a form of traditional Japanese music born and bred in Edo over 200 years ago.
Tokiwazu has something like a “school” for each house/family and each master/teacher, so even the same piece of music will be played in a slightly different style. This concert was a gathering of young performers transcending the “school” system, who performed famous songs that have been handed down to the traditional Japanese music of Tokiwazu-bushi from ancient times. Holding the concert at a studio in Harajuku considered a gateway to success for orchestras, instead of at a venue where traditional Japanese music concerts are regularly held, was an attempt to reach out to an audience outside the context of traditional Japanese music.
