Outline

“Cantat” is a new term devised to signify events/choral festivals where intensive concerts, seminars and performances are conducted for choirs and singers. Since its launch in 1996, Tokyo Cantat has been held every year with the object of encouraging the penetration of choral music in Japan society and promoting choral activities as a part of the culture. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, it had been postponed or only partially implemented, but in 2023 it was held as normal for the first time in four years.
Tokyo Cantat consists of two key components: the introduction of choral music from around the world and the endorsement of Japanese choral culture. As well as hosting seminars and concerts with world-renowned conductors and composers as guest lecturers, a concert was held to delve deeper into the music of Akira Miyoshi, who died ten years ago this year; a year that also marks the 90th anniversary of his birth. Besides these events, the Choral Conducting Competition for Young Conductors, held every other year since 2008, took place in front of a live audience for the first time in five years. These events have greatly contributed to the cultivation and development of young people to lead choral music in Japan going forward.

Profile

Music Tree ‐Choralist Association for the 21st century choral music
Established in November 1996 as “Music Tree” – a think tank of choral colleague to think of the choral music in 21st century.” Under the idea of working on choral music as an art form and promoting choral activities as part of culture, the group brings together people who are involved in choral music activities from all perspectives, such as choral conductors, composers, poets, pianists, voice trainers and professional choral singers to pursue opportunities to create “better music” together, as well as to encounter people from around the world with whom to share musical emotions and excitement.

Music Tree focuses on two key projects, Tokyo Cantat and Coro Festa. Tokyo Cantat offers a chance to experience and learn about the world’s top choral music while Coro Fest provides an opportunity to enjoy finer choral music with a greater number and variety of people. Organizers eventually want to elevate these into events that can attract a global audience.

The first event, Tokyo Cantat 97, was held in May 1997. Since then, Tokyo Cantat has become a regular fixture as a major chorus event every May.

Coro Fest vol. 1 was held in 1997, and since then has been held every year all over Japan (Matsuyama, Utsunomiya, Kobe, Kanazawa, Taisha, Niigata, Iwamizawa, Masuda, Kitakyushu, Kawakami (Nagano), Fukuyama, Matsumoto, Yokohama, Miyakonojo, Otaru, Semboku (Akita), Kawagoe, Hita, Tokai, Kushiro, Tsuruoka, Taketa (Oita)).

In addition, Music Tree organizes other events including “Atelier in Spring” (a choral seminar principally for students) and “Music Seminar in Yatsugatake” (planned and implemented with composers Tokuhide Niimi and Akira Nishimura, and featuring new works created every year with contemporary composers).

In 2011, “Tokyo Cantat 2010” (held the previous year) won the Incentive Award at Mitsubishi UFJ Trust Foundation Music Awards.
As of December 1, 2022, “Music Tree” – a think tank of choral colleague to think of the choral music in 21st century became Music Tree ‐ Choralist Association for the 21st century choral music.
