Festival of the Body on the Road H! - Newcomer “H” Sokerissa! Tokyo Road Dance Tour

  • Organization : AOKIKAKU
  • Section : None
  • Type of Grant Program : Single

Outline

H stands for human, hope, homeless and hurt. This dance tour was conceived and organized in the hope it would provide an opportunity for the rising number of people living in poverty and suffering due to the coronavirus pandemic to regain mental/physical plenty and hope. Dance performances of new work “The Day of Nihilism” by Newcomer “H” Sokerissa! were staged at three outside venues in Tokyo’s Ueno, Shibuya and Ikebukuro areas. Different events were held at each venue according to environmental characteristics and the anticipated audience base. In Ueno there was a simultaneous screening of the main-event documentary film “The Dancing Homeless” and a talk with Newcomer “H” Sokerissa! members, while the Higashi-Ikebukuro event featured a co-performance with artist Nao Nishihara.
Organizers put additional emphasis on recording the project. At the debriefing held in June 2023 when all the performances had ended there was a screening of a documentary video of the tour, a retrospective talk session, a display of the stage art used and photographs documenting activities, and the handing out of a booklet recording the tour.

Profile

AOKIKAKU
AOKIKAKU was founded in 2005 by dancer and choreographer Yuuki Aoki, when his view that homeless people living from day to day on the streets have physical senses lacking in people who live in more comfortable and fortunate environments became a desire to offer dancing by the homeless to wider society. AOKIKAKU organizes performances and workshops, revolving around planning and production for dance group Newcomer “H” Sokerissa!.
Aoki’s creative approach of embracing and leveraging individual physicality is highly acclaimed both in Japan and overseas.
