Outline

“Performing Acupunture” is a performance piece incorporating acupuncture treatment, created and premiered at Theater Commons Tokyo’21 by artist Aya Momose. In this experiential work conducted one-on-one between participants and an acupuncturist, participants fill out an original intake form created by Momose, and based on that the performing acupuncturist deciphers the participants’ conditions and administers acupuncture treatment.

In addition to the “Performing Acupuncture” performance, this project encompassed an exhibition of video and installations at the Theater der Welt 2023 in Frankfurt, Germany. Video in particular is a medium Momose specializes in; so rather than merely constituting a video record of the performance, the video was designed with images that give the impression of vicariously experiencing the performance, allowing visitors to the exhibition to experience firsthand the concept of the work. An exhibition was organized in addition to the performance in the hope that as many people as possible could experience the work.
