Event features
In this course, participants will do a total of five hands-on sessions from February 2024, culminating in a simple performance presented during the last session. During November 2023 and January 2024 we will hold a total of twelve one-day Kotsuzumi experience sessions for those who are unsure whether they will be able to go on to the main course. These sessions will enable would-be participants to have actual contact with the instruments, experience the enjoyment they bring and familiarize themselves with their depth and complexity, encouraging them to then apply for the course starting in February 2024. Participants of one-day experience sessions will be prioritized when applying for the course.

Publicity methods for the recruitment of participants (collaboration, cooperation, networking, etc.)
A promotional video of a class will be played on the in-store monitor at Okadaya Fuse (along Asakusa Kokusai Street), the venue for this project.
Advertisements will be placed in Tokyo newspapers (and possibly regional newspapers).

Ways to enable participants to continue with practical skills experience (other than programs covered by this grant) after the end of the event
If participants want to continue learning Kotsuzumi as a hobby after completing the five hands-on sessions, we will introduce them to the bimonthly Kotsuzumi classes held by the OHAYASHI PROJECT in Tokyo.
In addition, we can for example introduce those wanting individual lessons rather than group lessons to private lessons run by members of the OHAYASHI PROJECT, and to instructors in easy-to-get-to locations.

Profile

OHAYASHI PROJECT
Concerned about decline in the world of hogaku traditional Japanese music, which has seen an alarming drop in audience numbers and performances due to the niche nature and ageing of audiences, this organization engages in activities aimed at creating new fans of traditional performing arts.
Its main activities involve independent concerts combining hogaku and Western music, around 20 of which have been held since the group’s inception in 2010.
Besides performances, the group runs workshops and hands-on classes geared to different age groups from students to adults.
