Outline

The Japan Shakuhachi Professional-players Network (JSPN) 3rd Regular Concert “Traditional Shakuhachi and Innovative Shakuhachi” offered concertgoers the timbres, playing techniques and music of a range of Shakuchi; from the Shosouin-Shakuhachi (a restored instrument), said to be the prototype of the instrument and Jinasi Shakuhachi with its evocation of a Komuso monk procession, to the multi-holed Tako-Shakuhachi and the Okraulo, which features keys similar to a flute. The event also featured the Metal Shakuhachi, the basic shape and construction of which is the same as a bamboo Shakuhachi but which is made of the latest aluminum alloy. The first half of the program featured pieces reflecting the era in which each instrument developed, while the second half showcased contemporary works, including ensemble pieces, as well as new compositions by up-and-coming composers. In addition, between songs Hozan Nomura, JSPN representative, steered the event in interviews with performers and composers, and extra, straightforward commentary designed with the average audience member in mind. A symposium with guests and JSPN members was a good opportunity to convey the appeal of the Shakuhachi and Shakuhachi music, and to think about the future of the instrument.
