We position the composition for the player piano, a technology preceding artificial intelligence as a “Pioneer of AI Art”, the composition by quarter-tone, unfamiliar to human ears as an “Extension of Human Aesthetics”, the composition and drawing by today’s Generative AI as an “Extension of AI Art”. Could these three intersections not bring forth a Machine Aesthetics unknown to humans? This project is a one-day event that brings an early 20th-century player piano and a piano tuned a quarter-tone lower across all its keys to a historic building constructed at the end of the 19th century. The event comprises a “Music Concert + AI Art Exhibition at the foyer and beyond + AI Art & Aesthetics Research Meeting Symposium.” It will feature a continuous live performance of Conlon Nancarrow’s “Studies for Player Piano” using roll paper, a world premiere duet between the player piano (unmanned) and the quarter-tone piano (manned), and showcases of compositions and art displays generated by the latest AI technology. We cordially invite you to witness these offerings. Performers include: Takuya Otaki (quarter-tone piano performance), Toshie Kakinuma (symposium speaker), Hideki Nakazawa, Mika Kusakari.
