  • Section : Artistic and creative activity in Tokyo
  • Type of Grant Program : Single

Outline

This was the 6th installment of a concert series of solo performance works by Motoharu Kawashima. It was the largest scale concert in the series, with a total of 12 Japanese and Western instrumentalists, including guest performer the hichiriki player Hitomi Nakamura, the first Japanese instrumentalist to feature.
The first half of the concert traced the history of the hichiriki, offering performances with the ancient wind instrument the aulos, the large hichiriki (ohichiriki) – a reproduction instrument from The Shosoin Repository – and the contemporary hichiriki. In the second half, different methods were used to demonstrate new possibilities for the hichiriki today, including a new solo piece accompanied by video, and the performance of a chamber orchestra piece featuring all musicians.
