Outline

This is an open studio-style exhibition of new paintings by Ryunosuke Goji. By opening his creative process to the public, Goji will demonstrate the specificity of high-flow hand-mixed oil paints, different from oil paint in tubes which leaves brush strokes and can be applied thickly. Goji employs a modern perspective to reexamine the field of oil painting – a medium which made it possible to construct space on the canvas using layers of thin, highly transparent paint – and looks back on the history of art materials. The event also offers a display of art materials and related literature in the exhibition space. Goji explores a new viewpoint on painting by layering his tropical plant images with the loose and fluid colorants of hand-mixed oil paints.

Profile

Ryunosuke Goji
Born in Aichi Prefecture in 1988. Graduated with a B.F.A. in Oil Painting from Tokyo University of the Arts in 2013. Goji creates paintings with tropical plants as his principal motif. In recent years, his research into the history of art materials has led him to eliminate commercial tubes of paints in his work and use hand-mixed paints. Goji explores the physical properties of hand-mixed paints, which are different from paints in tubes, and the possibilities of painting expression today.
