Gao Xingjian’s drama “Toubou” (“Fugitives”) explored the Tiananmen Square protests; however, this production by Sanninnokai interprets it not as a documentary piece on current events but rather as a contemporary work for the generation born after 1989. It depicts humanity in a closed environment, and freely incorporates artistic expression in other fields such as video and calligraphy.

Sanninnokai
Once a year, director Okuda Tomoaki puts together a unit with two artists he would like to work with “once before he dies” to stage a selection of existing plays. As well as actors, Okuda targets directors, translators, dramaturgs, filmmakers, artists, producers, and all the people he has had the honor of meeting in his life. Okuda has defined theater as something you cannot create alone; that cannot reliably be created by two people; and for which you can finally form a successful relationship with three people. Based on this definition, his aim is to create theatrical works through collaboration with people from different professions, including actors.
