  • Organization : General Non-Profit Incorporated Organization Tokyo Biennale
  • Section : None
  • Type of Grant Program : Single

Outline

Held every two years, the Tokyo Biennale is an international art festival that sets the city of Tokyo as its main stage. The festival aims to dig deep into the city, as it is created together with the area’s local citizens, as well as a wide variety of artists and creators from around the world. The theme of this second edition is “Linkage: Creating Connections,” and the 36 artists and participating members aim to create a place where people can feel and think about the “connections” between people and people, the local community, the environment including other living creatures, society, history, and various other things.

Profile

【General Non-Profit Incorporated Organization Tokyo Biennale】
Held every two years, the Tokyo Biennale is a citizen-led international art festival.
Artists and creators in a wide range of fields from Japan and overseas dig deep into the city of Tokyo, leveraging its diverse local resources (public spaces, historical buildings, rivers, etc.), joining forces with local citizens to carry out projects deciphering local social climate, natural features, history, and culture, and creating opportunities to think about the challenges and the future for local communities. The aim of the Biennale is long-term local development by invigorating areas with residents and visitors from outside while organically collaborating with a wide range of related fields such as tourism, urban development, international exchange, welfare, education, and industry. Following an exhibition outlining the festival concept in 2018 and another outlining plans for the festival in 2019, the first event, Tokyo Biennale 2020/2021, was held in 2021.
