Artist Hikari MUKAI has given a solo exhibition and produced a collection of works.
Rather than the concept of a surface on which it is possible to move freely in all directions, MUKAI has envisioned a railroad track-like lane with a defined direction and speed of movement. The exhibition looked at the concept of moving on this lane, and the linear representation of flow lines.
The exhibition was held at WALLA, a gallery space in Kodaira city, with MUKAI utilizing the unique structure of this former private residence to conceive and install her works.
In producing the collection, she reflected on her initial interest when the works were conceived by compiling records of the works’ creation, by requesting written contributions to the compilation, and by being present at the gallery during the exhibition period, thereby attempting to analyze the works from a perspective other than just her own.

MUKAI creates works by linking images she perceives from colliding with the world as she passes through it with the memories she references when she selects materials.
Things she has seen before, such as “pears, porcelain, copier paper and penny candy Ramune soda,” and “buildings seen from the expressway, birthday cakes in a movie” are linked within her works (before she is conscious of having discovered them).
She discovers and collects different things going on in the universe, like passing a sandy area, making a mound of sand, and moving on.
