Traditional Crafts: Touching Brings Understanding ~An Invitation to Tactile Culture~

  • Organization : TAKUMI-Art du Japon
  • Section : None
  • Type of Grant Program : Single

Outline

Japan is a country of diverse cultures and regions that have given birth to world-class craft traditions. While many artisans carry on traditional crafts around Japan, this exhibition invites young artisans active in various fields to convene in Tokyo.
The concept for the exhibition is “touch” and the goal is to create a space for people to encounter the artisans and their works, for users and producers to interact, and for cross-generational connections. It is a chance to rediscover the value of traditional crafts and the appeal of each region that gave birth to them. This is especially relevant now as the world works to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which place great importance on traditional crafts.
We invite you to touch the works, interact with the artisans, and enjoy the whole sensory experience of these alluring traditional crafts.

Profile

【TAKUMI-Art du Japon】
The skills and spirit of the craftsmen that Japan is proud of are not only reflected in excellent cultural assets and products, but also serve as the source of cutting-edge technology that supports modern industry behind the scenes, contributing greatly to Japan’s competitiveness.
The delicacy of the “craftsmanship” spirit, the spirit of valuing even the invisible, and the fear, respect, and love for the nature that lies behind it are the core of the Japanese way of life that is still admired around the world today.
This spirit of “craftsmanship” is now in danger. We will promote activities to restore the spirit of craftsmanship to the center of society.
