2023 marked the 10th anniversary of the death of film director/visual folklorist Himeda Tadayoshi (September 10 1928 – July 29 2013).
Himeda was involved in the production of 270 documentary films aimed at capturing on film the regional folk culture of Japan that has been disappearing before our eyes from the country’s postwar period of rapid economic growth onwards. These are regarded as an anthropological legacy such as will never be captured on film again.
For this retrospective, 23 works were carefully selected and screened over six days. Nine guest speakers discussed Himeda’s work from different perspectives. The event created the opportunity for a critical reappraisal of Himeda’s works, and for passing it on to the next generation.
Center for Ethnological Visual Documentation
Founded in 1976. The Center regards the profound interaction and coexistence with nature developed over a long history as Japan’s “base culture.” It has looked at people’s lives and behaviors with a focus on the Japanese archipelago in an attempt elucidate this “base culture” concept. To date the center has produced 119 film works and over 150 video works.
