Outline

A festival launched to expand the possibilities of the documentary, in which people who create, appear in, and watch film and videos spend a once-in-a-lifetime occasion together in the same space. For this edition of the festival, participants discussed and cataloged what they recollect through film. These included Fukuda Pero, who has photographed the songs and dances of indigenous people living in the African Great Lakes region; Kotaka Takuro, who probes new forms of expression for regions facing social issues; Matsui Itaru+Sato Kohei, who attempt to revitalize communities using the documentary medium as a new form of “folklore”; cultural activist Asada Wataru who engages in support for disaster-stricken areas through music; Iida Masashige, who has talked about the “role of filming existence”; and the Docu Athan project (Kitakado Yuki+Kubota Toru), which works with Burmese filmmakers who continue to create while fleeing oppression.
The event also provided a platform for diverse voices and works, including a selection of short films unreleased in Japan and curated by Kuwayama Atsushi and rikeylittleforest, and an exhibition of new works by Ryo Kameyama, a photographer who chronicles various conflict zones.

Profile

DOCU MEMENTO Executive Committee
The Committee produces video works and runs events for the purpose of suggesting a new approach to the documentary and giving the documentary its place as a cultural force, as well as for the purpose of designing the ideal environment for documentary creators by itself. Every year it holds Docu Memento in Shinagawa-ku in Tokyo, a festival established in 2017.The festival explores new forms of expression linked to society, creating documentaries that offer an interactive experience different from television broadcasts or theaters. As well as expanding video works to internet, television and film platforms, its documentaries also feature on the website of the UK’s Guardian newspaper.
