Even within the trends of contemporary Japanese music that began in the 1960s, there was barely any combination of the Shakuhachi and the recorder, the similar vertical flutes of East and West. This concert was conceived with the aim of further developing this combination and creating new music with the flutes of East and West, the Shakuhachi and the recorder. New works by eminent young composers Suguru Wagatsuma and Kohsuke Negishi are forging new paths for the Shakuhachi and the recorder. In addition to shakuhachi maestro Tadashi Tajima, the concert co-starred Akihito Obama, a member of “The Shakuhachi 5.” The aim of the concert was to promote the Shakuhachi to the next generation. Representing the recorder was Toshiya Suzuki, who continues to expand recorder technique and repertoire. Featuring young composers Suguru Wagatsuma and Kohsuke Negishi, the talented composer Terumichi Tanaka, leading Japanese composer Joji Yuasa, and the world-renowned composer Toshio Hosokawa, the concert offered a broad take on the world of composition.
