On the rooftop of a building in Tokyo’s Shimotakaido district, Shihoka Imai has created a work she calls a “device” that mainly uses sunlight to develop an installation based on the phenomenon of light. Visitors to the exhibition were given a lecture-style commentary. Visitors could also buy an archive catalog featuring images of the exhibition and details about the work. This was a joint exhibition with sculptor Kazuki Oishi.
Exhibition information below.
It has been about 400 years since the telescope invented by Galileo first observed the Moon’s surface. Today, radio telescopes even capture electromagnetic waves of invisible light to observe distant objects. Human beings have discovered the possibilities of light in every possible way.
This exhibition attempts to use light as a means and to observe it as an object. The location is the rooftop of a building. The rules of observation are determined by the work. The work, which is designed as a device, makes it possible to record light that has yet to be seen.
