Outline

At the invitation of Rossella Menegazzo, a professor in the Department of Cultural and Environmental Heritage at the University of Milan, “Forma della Noh” was held as a public performance geared towards not only University of Milan students but also the public. As well as high-quality demonstrations of Noh including Otoko Mai/Chu-no-mai, Shimai “Funabenkei,” Mai “Gaku,” Shimai “Yoroboshi,” “Ikkan“Banshiki,” and “shishi,” a scholarly commentary was also provided.
Kazufusa Hosho performed dance and provided commentary, Tetsuya Kidani performed jiuta music, and Onodera Ryuichi performed the fue (flute). Hosho was acclaimed for delivering his commentary in Italian without the aid of an interpreter. An introduction was given to aesthetic concepts such as “mitate” and “yohaku” which are important to understanding Japanese traditional performing arts and other forms of art, attesting to the high level of performance technique favored by the Japanese. The event also presented different Noh movement patterns, encouraging not only a theoretical but also a sensory experience.
