Outline

Introduced from mainland Asia, the Shakuhachi has come to be recognized as a form of traditional music that has continued to evolve in its own unique way in Japan.With the help of composers, event organizers, and planners, and through the proactive initiatives and efforts of Shakuhachi performers, the instrument features in a variety of musical fields and continues to expand its scope of activities.

By focusing on the scales found in Shakuhachi music, and by showcasing a wide range of works, this concert demonstrated the diversity, affinity, adaptability and expressive powers of the Shakuhachi from a musical perspective.
In addition, by featuring pieces that led to a spate of innovative works and activities in different eras, and by offering contemporary works including ensemble pieces as well as new compositions by up-and-coming composers, the concert provided an opportunity to think about the future of the Shakuhachi and of Shakuhachi music.

Profile

Japan Shakuhachi Professional-players Network
Consisting solely of professional Shakuhachi musicians, the Network was founded in July, 2018 for the principle purpose of enhancing the value of Shakuhachi music and musicians, and contributing to the development and diffusion of Japanese culture. Recognizing the diversity, personality and individuality of Shakuhachi music, the Network boosts research on and improvement of the instrument itself, promotes research and analysis of Shakuhachi music, and encourages information-sharing regarding playing techniques and teaching; and by means of flexible ideas and a high level of musicianship based on the abundant experience of its members, the Network intends to become a source of communication and promotion for new Shakuhachi music in its ongoing activities.
