Concert Notes
For this concert, the Tokyo Philharmonic Chorus invites internationally renowned maestro Tatsuya Shimono as conductor. Born in 1969, Shimono came into the spotlight when he won the Besançon International Competition for Young Conductors in 2001. Currently he is enjoying a remarkable international career spanning various genres including opera and ballet in addition to his principal field, orchestra music. Although he has previously appeared with the Tokyo Philharmonic Chorus a number of times in orchestral concerts featuring chorus, this will be the first time he takes the podium to conduct a concert entirely by this choir. With Maestro Shimono’s profound and broad knowledge of music, this new challenge in choral artistry will be the focus of much attention.

Profile

【Tokyo Philharmonic Chorus】
Tokyo Philharmonic Chorus, founded in 1956, is Japan’s foremost independent professional choir. All the members are the graduates from Japanese or European music conservatories and represent the highest level of choral music in Japan. The choir holds about 200 concerts annually in Japan, and has also made several appearances overseas. The choir performs a wide range of pieces from different periods and genres, but the core of its work is commissioning Japanese composers and premiering new compositions. The number of compositions, that have been commissioned and premiered by Tokyo Philharmonic Chorus, amounts to a number of 207 up to now. By performing these compositions constantly in their concerts, the choir has taken an important role in building up a fundamental repertoire of contemporary choral music in Japan.
