Outline

Kiyokazu Kanze has been invited to the 2016 Lincoln Center Festival, New York’s largest performing arts festival of the summer.
Kanze has made great efforts to promote and popularize the Japanese traditional art of Noh whether at home or abroad; with the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games around the corner, this can be seen as an ideal opportunity to communicate Japanese culture to the world, and the invitation to perform has been readily accepted.

Profile

Kiyokazu Kanze
Born in 1959, Kanze is the eldest son of the 25th grand master of the Kanze School, Sakon (Motomass) Kanze. In 1990 he succeeded his father and now drives the world of contemporary Noh. As well as performing in Japan, he performs overseas, and enthusiastically works on the revival of works like Hakozaki, Akoya no matsu and new Noh works such as Rikyu. In recent years he has worked on cross-genre exchanges with Japanese traditional arts such as Kabuki and Bunraku.

In 2012 he received the 63rd Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s Art Encouragement Prize, and in 2015 he was awarded the Medal with Purple Ribbon.
He is a designated keeper of Important Intangible Cultural
Properties (for Nohgaku, collective recognition category).
