Short Term Lesson in Koto

This summer, embrace the traditions of Japan!

This program, which is made up of six lessons and a final performance presentation, provides an opportunity to learn performing arts from professional instructors. Learn a traditional performing art for real, and have fun at the same time!

Program

Choose either the “Koto” or the “Shamisen” Course and take part in six lessons plus a final performance.

  • Koto Course
    Participants: Students from 1st year of elementary school through 3rd year of high school (a)10:00-11:00 or (b)11:15-12:15
  • Samisen Course
    Participants: Students from 3rd year of elementary school through 3rd year of high school (a)14:00-15:00 or (b)15:15-16:15
    *Participants cannot specify their lesson times.

Dates
Lessons: Sunday, July 31 – Saturday, August 6
*6 lessons in total. No lessons on Wednesday, August 3.
Performance: Sunday, August 7 Including rehearsal and performance by the professionals
Parent and child experience day: Sunday, July 31 for Koto, Saturday, August 6 for Shamisen
We have created a special “Parent and child experience day” that adults can also take part in. One adult per family may participate.
Share time with your child experiencing traditional performing arts.

Conditions for participation
1. Ability to attend all lessons and the final performance
2. Ability to cooperate in publicity activities related to this project (participation in press coverage, consent to publication/broadcast of photos/video footage in various media, etc.)

Capacity
16 for each courses (8 for 1 class)

Participation fee

5,000 yen
* A separate materials charge of approximately 1,500 yen will apply.

How to participate

Application
Fill out the application form on the back of the flyer and submit to the cultural facilities in Koto-ku (except Morishita Culture Center) / Sogo Kumin Center (General Residents’ Center) or send it to Koto-ku Bunka Center (FAX:03-3646-8369) by FAX.

For submission by E-mail, send an e-mail to osc-koto@geidankyo.or.jp including (1)Name of the participant, (2)Sex, (3)Grade, (4)Name of the guardian, (5)Address, (6)Phone number, (7)Course you wish to apply (Koto/Shamisen), (9)Any experience of traditional performing arts.

*Your personal information will be used only by Koto-ku Bunka Center and Traditional Performing Arts for Kids Office for the purpose of executing this program.

14:00-15:45 Mini-performance & Hands-on experience area
See the skills of professionals up close! Also, handle instruments such as the shamisen, koto, kotsuzumi and taiko drums etc., and move your body to Nihon buyo dance and Noh.

16:00-16:50 Hall viewing
Relax and enjoy a performance by children who took the Short Term Lesson, and an authentic, professional show by the instructors.
