The inner palace of the Edo Castle was the living quarters of the wives and mother of the shogun, and a place for rearing and educating future heirs of the shogun to keep the lineage going. The exhibit sheds light on the actual lives of the shogun’s wives and mothers who were from various social backgrounds ranging from the Imperial family and court to samurai households, and the lavish arrangements of the inner palace, mainly based on references preserved by the Tokugawa Memorial Foundation.
