Tokyo Art Research Lab
Thought, Skill and Dailogue: Basic Program

Energizing Art Projects

Genre:
  • Visual Art / Media Art ,
  • Art Project ,
  • Lecture / Symposium ,
  • Workshop

What is required is “strength in the basics”: thought, skill, and dialogue. Apart from current government policy or economic structure, what is needed is the ability to face what is going on in a given area, to think through and to give form by planning to art projects on the ground as they grapple with society in all its different facets. This requires “thought” regarding social issues, the “skill” to actually put a project together, and “dialogue” with others in the interest of creating a shared sense of the questions to be faced. The Tokyo Art Research Lab’s “Thought, Skill and Dialogue” is aimed at those administrators who give impetus to an art project.

This year-long “Basic Program” is aimed at art project administrators, and those who wish to acquire the basic skills necessary to shoulder administrative responsibilities.
Lectures are in Japanese.

Program characteristics

Four Approaches

1 Knowing the Job
We will cover everyday operations ― preparation, planning, execution, recording/reporting, and verification/evaluation ― for administrators currently involved in art projects. With invited guests, we will consider on-site behavior and awareness, and problems that may be encountered.
2 Encountering the Site
We will visit projects in and around Tokyo, view the activities there, and talk with the people involved.
3 In Search of Insight/Broadening Horizons
Through discussion with guests playing leading roles in a variety of fields, we will encounter a wide range of viewpoints and social issues, considering why different art projects take place with a view to finding deeper insights and broader horizons.
4 Gathering Information
No input, no output. Experts will give instruction in information-gathering and -application techniques useful in conducting an art project.

Four School Managers Offer Educational Support
These managers will offer material to support the lecture content, and respond to inquiries from participants. Introduction to ongoing art projects can be arranged for participants not currently active.
