When you hear someone talk about their roots, I want you to remember your home.
“Tokyo, Soup, Blanket and Travelogue,” a new art project with Shirotama Hitsujiya at its core, celebrates its first anniversary this year. The theme for the second installation of the project’s Taidan Kikou series, planned for spring 2015, is “Ekoda Soup.” The event will focus on experiences from Tokyo’s Ekoda district, where a number of shops closed last year. Among them was the Ekoda Market, nicknamed “the kitchen of Ekoda.” Hitsujiya will be joined by guests Shohei Nanbu, who managed the Irifuneya Parched Bean Shop in Ekoda Market for fifty years, and Kenichi Abe, who put on theatrical performances at the market. The event’s co-host Kei Ito was also born and raised in Ekoda, albeit as part of a different generation than the two guests. With dramaturge Kaku Nagashima joining in to add spice to this “Ekoda Soup” of guests, audience members will be treated to a conversation that probes the meaning of home and roots.
