Why collectives now?

TERATOTERA, which develops a range of art projects in westside districts along the JR Chuo Line, will start its 2019 program by holding Collective Forum vol.01.
“Collective” is a word recently heard a lot in the world of contemporary art, theater, performance etc. This is a term used when multiple artists regularly work together on creative activities. However, when we look at history it is not only in the present day that artists form groups and present works as a group; there were various artists’ groups in the past as well. However, from 2010 onwards, the definition expanded from meaning the forming of a group who simply make art together, and now seems to be showing more diversity and individual development.
The aim of the Collective Forum is to introduce various ongoing collectives and explore their contemporary significance and potential. Why collectives now?
We will examine this question, set to be a major key to illuminating the future of art, from a variety of perspectives.
