Seeking members for Fan Fan Club! Confidently turning frustration and negativity into something enjoyable

Ever have vague feelings of frustration and negativity in everyday family affairs, at work or at school, or in community activities?
With the frustrations and negativity that we feel on an everyday basis as a starting point, “Fan Fan Club” explores “dialogue to decipher unchallenged ideas.”
In a total of nine sessions, for the first five we spend time on activities such as introducing ourselves in unusual or unconventional ways, learning each other’s interests, and making time for dialogue in which to re-examine ourselves. In addition, participants will enjoy encounters with different examples of frustration and negativity, centering on “time to have a go” activities devised by members who have participated in Fan Fan Club for some time and based on their respective interests. Then in the last four sessions, we start “time to have a go” activities by new members taking part for the first time. We will each focus on a theme, aiming to make time to generate “learning for wellbeing” in a more practical manner through conducting research reports and discussions on what we found interesting, and experimenting to make everyday life a little more fun.
For this third member recruitment, “Fan Fan Club”is scheduled to be held online. Following on from the second term, we also plan to experiment with enjoyable ways to communicate which are only possible online.

Planned activities

“Time to have a go”
The person in charge for that day will be decided from among members, and each will take about 30 minutes to 1 hour to plan and design presentations, discussions, workshops, etc. based on their own interests.
The first five sessions will be conducted by members who have participated in Fan Fan Club for some time, and the last four sessions will be conducted by first-time members.

Creating the “Fan Fan Letter”
Members will together produce “Fan Fan Letter,” the Fan Fan newsletter published twice a month. Ideas for articles and design will be considered together with members.

FAQ

Q1: Do I have to take part in every session?
A1: As there is a scheduled flow in place for all nine sessions, you may not be able to fully enjoy the project if you miss a lot of sessions, but we will try and make up for absences as much as we can. If you are concerned that you may miss sessions, please consult us first.

Q2: Can I take part if I live outside Sumida-ku?
A2: Of course. We are holding this Fan Fan Club on an online basis so people who live far away are also welcome to join.

Q3: Can we choose any theme or method we want to develop further through Fan Fan Club?
A3: In principle participants can decide for themselves. However ideally, we would like you to get together with other members of Fan Fan club to talk over and think about which themes and methods to choose.
In addition, this term we will include time with themes set in advance, so we hope you can get an idea of the context using these themes as a guide. (Information will be posted on Facebook as needed.)

Q4: What sort of activities have been involved in the project so far?
A4: The first term comprised eleven sessions, and activities included bringing things we were attached to and discussing the meaning of attachment together; another activity saw each member standing somewhere in their neighborhood for about ten minutes, putting their impressions into writing and talked about them with the others; we also challenged ourselves to make picture books ourselves using a variety of methods…in all these activities we placed value on just going ahead and trying something if someone came up with something they wanted to try.
The basic stance was the same for the second term, with all six sessions held online; we sent each other postcards, discussed the theme of “words that don’t feel right,” thought about habits and mannerisms while imitating each other’s habits, and discussed ambition.
We will continue this basic approach in terms of the new recruitment period and hope we can create a forum for participating members to try out the things they want to do.
You can view previous Facebook posts to get an idea of activities to date.

Q5: Will activities be held online only?
A5: Sessions during this round of recruitment will be conducted on an online basis. We might possibly meet and engage in activities in person, depending on the members, the activity, and the social circumstances.
Participants will enjoy thinking not only about what to talk about, but also how to talk in the online environment.

Q6: Will you recruit any more members?
This fiscal year we don’t plan to recruit members in the same way for now. There is a possibility that we will change the way we operate after October, so please take this opportunity to consider participating. If you are at all interested, please contact us.
