Project to Incubate Audiences for Diverse Cinema (ADC)

  • Organization : Independent Cinema Guild
  • Section : Collaboration
  • Type of Grant Program : Single
  • Art Forms : Visual Art / Media Art

Outline

How do we create a viewing environment and future audiences for art films and documentaries that struggle in a commercial market?
A tripartite gathering of filmmakers, exhibitors and audience came together for a series of workshops in Indonesia and Japan to discuss screening opportunities and audience growth.
Alongside the workshops, independent films from both countries were screened.
The first part of the project saw Indonesian film exhibitors coming to Japan to visit Japan’s independent arthouse theaters and to hear from organizers and Japanese exhibitors.
Independent films from both countries were screened, and there was an international discussion panel addressing the relevant themes.
The second part involved Japanese film practitioners visiting Indonesia, attending screenings of Japanese films in Yogyakarta and Jakarta, and debating with local audiences.
The community of independent filmmakers, exhibitors and audiences in the two countries confronted the issues together, strengthening the community and mulling ways to create future audiences.
