Tokyo Multus #1:The Premire Performance in Japan of Canto Ostinato for 2 Pianos by Tomoko Mukaiyama

  • Organization : Committee for Monnaka Tenjo Hall
  • Section : Collaboration
  • Type of Grant Program : Single
  • Art Forms : Interdisciplinary

Outline

This is the first performance in Japan of this installation-concert featuring a performance of the Simeon ten Holt piece “Canto Ostinato for 2 pianos” (1976 — 79) with Tomoko Mukaiyama and Hibiki Tamura on piano, and a light installation by Tomoko Mukaiyama and Jean Kalman. There will also be a English subtitled screening of a documentary film about this piece, “Over Canto” (2011), released in the Netherlands last year in 2011.
This is the first in the “Multus” series of performances organized by artist and musician Tomoko Mukaiyama. This series explores the repertoire for multiple pianos (i.e. 2, 4 and 6), a repertoire that has barely been established in Japan. This series presents a new form of art that combines collaborative music and visual art.
