Outline

Baby Space is an experimental, avant-garde, rational performance art based in science, and has been proven effective through neuroscience research. While it is intended for infants, it also includes elements necessary for children with developmental disabilities. A space is created in which parents and children can relax and spend time as they wish, watch a performance, and after the performance is over, once again “play.” This is an unprecedented type of performance that incorporates installation art. Because the audience is small and watches the show in a constrained space, the performers take a conscientious and respectful approach.

Profile

Japan Union of Theatrical Companies for Children and Young People (JIENKYO)
Responding to the nationwide proliferation of performances by groups specializing in drama for children in the years following World War II, JIENKYO was established in 1975 with three goals: to establish a professional foundation for theater aimed at children and young people, to support the daily life and health of people involved in theater for children and young people, and to address national issues related to theater for children and young people. The organization was originally called the Japan Council on Theatrical Companies for Children but changed its name to the Japan Council on Theatrical Companies for Children and Young People in 1988. In 2001 JIENKYO received approval from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry to become a business cooperative and took on its current name. Member theatrical companies span a wide range of genres, including stage drama, puppet theater, shadow theater, and performance art.
