The Dynamism of Contemporary Japanese Theatre

  • Organization : The Tsubouchi Memorial Theatre Museum, Waseda University
  • Section : Artistic and creative activity in Tokyo
  • Type of Grant Program : Single
  • Art Forms : Interdisciplinary

Outline

In recent years, contemporary Japanese theatre has shown various developments. With a particular focus on theatrical performances during the period between 1990s and the present time, this exhibition aimed to explore, explain, and display the ‘expansion’ and ‘connection’ of contemporary Japanese theatre. Where did those artists in contemporary Japanese theatre come from? And what their future plans are? What problems and conflicts are shared within the field? Fliers and posters were presented alongside related documents and performance footages. The exhibit contributed to transport people from the Theatre Museum to the stage itself. The tip of the arrow pointed towards a theatre yet undiscovered.
