Profile

Theatre Collective HANCHU-YUEI
A theater collective founded in 2007. Suguru Yamamoto writes and directs all the productions. Starting with subjects he is drawn to, such as life and death, senses and language, collective society and family, his creations aim further for more universal questions. His unique way of directing the stage that combines actors with projection of words, photography, color, light and shadow as well as his strong scenario that challenges the sense of morality of the audience have gathered attention in recent years, leading his path to overseas. The collective has done collaborative production in Malaysia, Thailand, India, China, U.S.A., and Singapore. For one of its works “Girl X,” the collective has received Bangkok Theatre Festival 2014 Award for Best Original Script and Best Play. As a recipient of Asian Cultural Council Japan-United States Arts program NY fellowship, Yamamoto will be staying in NY for 6 months in 2019.
